In a collaboration with our student teacher Ms. Hof and Mrs. Moses, our 5th and 6th grade artists have been diving into the bold and imaginative world of Cubism! This exciting unit introduced students to the life and work of Pablo Picasso, one of the most influential artists of the 20th century. Students learned how Picasso challenged traditional ways of seeing by breaking subjects into geometric shapes and showing multiple perspectives all at once.

After exploring examples of Cubist artwork, students began creating their own abstract portraits. They carefully designed their faces using organic shapes, experimenting with unusual proportions, angles, and creative compositions. This allowed them to step outside of “realistic” drawing and embrace a more expressive, imaginative style.

To take their artwork a step further, students combined traditional and modern techniques by using AI technology. They wrote detailed, descriptive sentences about their drawings, which were then used to transform their sketches into vibrant digital paintings. This process helped students see how language and technology can work together to enhance artistic expression.
We are so proud of the creativity, risk-taking, and innovation shown by our young artists. Their work truly reflects the spirit of Cubism—seeing the world in new and unexpected ways!
