Simons Middle School is excited to present its spring performance of The Wizard of Oz, featuring an incredible cast of 60 students from grades 6 through 8. This production marks Carla Prather’s 18th musical/play as director, continuing a tradition of outstanding student performances and memorable school productions. Prather not only directs the show, but also choreographs each performance and designs and creates the props and set pieces that bring the Land of Oz to life. From the vibrant costumes and creative scenery to the energetic musical numbers, the production is sure to captivate audiences of all ages.
Throughout the rehearsal process, students gain meaningful learning experiences that extend far beyond the stage. Theater teaches powerful soft skills such as teamwork, communication, dedication, and self-confidence as students learn lines, practice choreography, and support one another through challenges. Cast and crew members must collaborate, listen carefully, take direction, and problem-solve in real time—whether it’s remembering a cue, adjusting blocking, or handling behind-the-scenes responsibilities. Each student plays an important role in making the production successful, helping them develop a sense of belonging and pride.
In addition to soft skills, The Wizard of Oz strengthens durable skills that students can carry into every future opportunity. Students build leadership, perseverance, time management, creativity, and responsibility as they balance rehearsals with schoolwork and commit to the full production process. Public speaking and performance skills also help students become more comfortable presenting themselves in front of others—an ability that benefits them in academics, careers, and life. Simons Middle School will proudly perform for the district student body as well as host a community performance, bringing families and community members together to celebrate the talent, hard work, and growth of its students.
