Students at Catlettsburg Elementary presented a Veteran’s Day celebration for families and veterans on Tuesday, November 11, 2025. Mrs. Criss, librarian and music teacher, worked with students in kindergarten through fifth grade on songs and speaking parts to honor our local men and women of the armed forces. The script and songs were provided and adapted from an online music curriculum called Music Play Online. This curriculum was first introduced to Mrs. Criss as a part of KEDC’s Renaissance Arts Grant. It has been such a valuable resource for the students of Catlettsburg and Mrs. Criss, as there is not a full-time music teacher. An unexpected mishap of snow caused the program to be delayed by two hours, but there was still a wonderful turn out of veterans and families to enjoy the program. The program began with our 5th grade safety patrol students leading the audience in the Pledge of Allegiance, followed by a moment of silence. Students that wished to participate as speakers then began reciting their lines with songs mixed in throughout the ceremony. 4th and 5th grade students began the singing portion with “American Song”, followed by kindergarten and 1st grade singing “Peace In My Heart”. The final song was an emotional tribute complete with sign language titled “Thank You” sung by our 2nd and 3rd grade students. With tears in their eyes, the veterans and families gave a standing ovation for the hard work of the children and staff of Catlettsburg Elementary.
