Each holiday season, a unique partnership among McCreary County, neighboring counties, and the Big South Fork Scenic Railway transforms the historic rail line in Stearns, Kentucky, into a magical journey inspired by the beloved story The Polar Express. Through this collaboration, students, educators, and community members work together to create an immersive experience that brings the spirit of Christmas to families nationwide.

Students from McCreary Central’s Raider Theatre play an important role in the production of the Polar Express Train Ride. High school students often serve as performers and volunteers, portraying characters from the story and helping guide passengers through the experience. Months of preparation go into rehearsals and planning so that students can confidently perform for the thousands of visitors who ride the train each holiday season. The event encourages guests to wear pajamas like the children in the story while they enjoy hot chocolate, cookies, music, and storytelling aboard the train before arriving at the “North Pole,” where Santa greets passengers and presents each child with “the first gift of Christmas”, a sleigh bell.

The collaboration extends beyond performance roles. Students in school technical and vocational programs also contribute to the event by helping construct the North Pole set along the railway route. These students travel to the site and spend time building and installing the festive scenery, gaining practical construction experience while contributing to a community tradition. According to organizers, this involvement helps students develop applicable skills while also giving them a sense of ownership in an event that belongs to the entire community.

Beyond its entertainment value, the Polar Express Train Ride serves as a powerful example of school–community partnership. The event supports tourism, promotes regional pride, and allows students to experience authentic learning through the arts, technical education, and service. By working together, schools and community organizations create a meaningful tradition that not only celebrates the holiday season but also strengthens connections between education and the local community.
