One of my passions is teaching percussion ensemble. Though it is sometimes viewed as a frivolity, or an un-needed addition to a instrumental program, I believe it is a great way for students to not only gain a more in-depth knowledge of the percussion discipline, but also better understand global influences of music. In my new position at Pulaski County High School, we are taking steps to establish a comprehensive percussion program within the existing instrumental music offerings. This has lead to the creation of the Pulaski County Percussion Ensemble. Being the first year, we have started with modest goals and are working towards developing a small concert to present at the end of the spring. However, we are trying to establish our future success using collaboration with outside ensembles. The Campbellsville University Percussion Ensemble, which I also am involved with as an adjunct instructor, will be presenting a concert prior to their KMEA performance in Louisville for our students here at PCHS. In addition, we are collaborating with the award winning Pulaski County High School choir to perform Dan Forest’s “Three Nocturnes,” for percussion quartet and chamber choir. These are just a few of the ways we are changing our offerings to include more percussion based instruction. Hopefully, we will be able to see the growth and continued success of this group for years to come.
