My name is Heather Foister, and I direct SHS Musical Productions at Somerset High School in Somerset, KY. Over time, it has been such a joy to see our students graduate and succeed in their endeavors. In recent years, I’ve discovered an even greater joy: watching former students return and invest in the program they once shined in.

In 2016, I was still a “green” musical director with only a few shows under my belt when I took on the insurmountable task that is directing The Wizard of Oz. Beyond its classic songs, costuming, and iconic storyline, this musical contains some of the most difficult ensemble arrangements we’ve ever presented on our stage. One student at the time, Morgan Burgess (now Morgan Hunt—because our former students get married and it’s awesome!), found herself on stage more than expected for one main reason: her amazing vocals. She learned quickly, retained everything, and made sure those around her were singing the correct parts.

As a student, Morgan often led her peers in hallway rehearsals and frequently knew the music better than I did! This became a pattern. She would audition or sign up for smaller roles, but end up in the spotlight because, quite simply, she was absolutely needed as a triple threat—acting, singing, and dancing. Her musicality at such a young age was truly astounding.

After earning her music degree from Belmont University, Morgan found herself back in Somerset—and back on our stage. This time, she led the area she excelled in most: music. Productions such as The Show Must Go On, The Addams Family, The Music Man, The Little Mermaid, and High School Musical were all prepared, music-wise, by one of our very own.

THIS is when you step back and see a program come full circle. THIS is when you smile and truly appreciate building something that feels like family.

I was incredibly proud to add Morgan to our staff and grateful for all she did to help our program grow during her time with us. She is not alone among alumni returning to serve our musical program, and I can’t wait to share about two more former students who have returned in the upcoming newsletters!

*Bonus Fact: Morgan ended up on the stage multiple times as a part of our staff as an understudy for choreography along with directing music and cueing all of the tracks! Some things never change!
