Have you ever read “The Little Engine That Could”? Through belief, perseverance, and an unwavering goal, the little engine proved that determination can overcome any obstacle. As it turns out, that story became a powerful reflection of our own journey as the Lee County High School Pride of the Mountains Marching Band launched into the 2025 KMEA marching season. Nestled at the head of the Kentucky River in the foothills of Appalachia, Lee County is often celebrated for its breathtaking natural beauty and its famous woolly worm. In the fall of 2025, however, this small southeastern Kentucky community earned statewide attention for an entirely new reason. The Lee County High School Pride of the Mountains emerged as a force on the marching band field, capturing the hearts of audiences and setting a new standard of excellence for our program. The 2025 season stands as one of the most successful in the band’s history with their show entitled: “Colours of Jazz-Midnight at Tony’s”. Written by band director, Tony Barrett, the show included titles such as “Birdland,” “September,” “Feeling Good,” and “Tank.” The Pride of the Mountains claimed 1st Place at the KMEA State Quarterfinals, setting a new school record and completing an undefeated season in Class 1A. Momentum continued to build at the State Semifinals, where the band captured the Class 1A Championship with a record-setting score of 86.95. The season culminated with an outstanding performance at the KMEA State Finals, where the Pride of the Mountains earned 3rd Place in Class 1A—the highest state finals placement in school history. What began as a belief in what could be became proof of what is possible. Through hard work, unity, and an unshakable commitment to excellence, the Lee County High School Pride of the Mountains Marching Band did more than compete—they made history and proudly represented their community on the state’s biggest stage.
